Pioneers allow just one run in sweep of SWC

Chris Buitron went three-for-four in Saturday's 11-1 win over Southwestern Christian. Buitron also had the game-ending hit to give WBU a ten-run rule.
Box Score In its second Sooner Athletic Conference series of the year, the Wayland Baptist baseball team picked up a three-game sweep over Southwestern Christian (Bethany, Okla.) in dominating fashion, outscoring the Eagles 28-0 in Friday's doubleheader, then Pioneers winning the final game of the series on Saturday, 11-1.

With Taylor Bridges (3-1) picking up where fellow starting pitchers Tom Bailey and Mason Taylor left off, Wayland (17-6, 6-0) only had to use three pitchers over the weekend. The combination of Bailey, Taylor and Bridges allowed just a single run, spread out between just nine hits over 22 innings.

Southwestern Christian (3-14, 0-6) scored its only run in the eighth inning of game three after an RBI groundout with runners on second and third.

Bridges pitched masterfully on Saturday, throwing his first-career complete game, striking out seven over eight strong innings.

A scheduled nine-inning game, the Pioneers had other ideas as Chris Buitron hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to give Wayland a ten-run advantage. Chance Rollins, who brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI single to right, scored the game-ending run to give Wayland and 11-1 win.

The Pioneers scored in five of the eight innings, two in the first, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four in the sixth to go along with the two-run eighth.

Damion Lovato, Wayland's leading run producer, brought in the first run of the game with a single to center field, bringing home Aaron Vallance. Jovany Padilla, who was red-hot this weekend, brought home the second run of the inning, giving WBU a 2-0 lead after one complete.

Extra-base hits propelled the Pioneers in the fourth, with Padilla scoring on a sacrifice fly after a triple, and Tyler Doolittle doubling to bring home Buitron.

Lovato smoked a ball to the left center gap in the fifth, but had to settle for a sac-fly after the wind knocked it down, pushing Wayland's lead to 5-0.

The Pioneers opened the gates in the sixth, breaking out for a four-run inning. Doolittle plated his second run of the game with an RBI single before Buitron snuck into home on a first-and-third play. Josh Alexander wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single to center, giving WBU a comfortable 9-0 lead after six innings of play.

After Buitron's walk-off single, the Pioneers hit the locker room with an 11-1 win, as well as a three-game sweep over the Eagles.

Alexander, Padilla and Buitron all had three hits on the day, while Doolittle picked up a pair of hits in WBU's big win.

The Pioneers will take a short break before returning to the diamond on Wednesday to take on Schreiner (10-12) at 2:00 p.m. at Wilder Field. Wayland will resume conference play when it takes on St. Gregory's on the road Friday and Saturday.
