Volleyballers get back on track with sweep

Cat Wiechmann (12), Cindy Horn and Shahala Hawkins celebrate a point.
Box Score Inspired by their gritty performance against the defending national champions some 13 hours earlier, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team jumped back on the winning track on day two of the Coca-Cola Classic by sweeping Huston-Tillotson on Saturday morning in Hutcherson Center, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15.

The 11th-ranked Pioneers (7-5) made short work of the Lady Rams, cruising to their most lopsided win of the season. It was Wayland's third sweep in four outings, interrupted only by Friday night's four-set loss to second-ranked University of Texas-Brownsville.

The Pioneers are set to play their fourth and final match of the Coca-Cola Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday against undefeated and seventh-ranked Columbia, Mo.

Against Huston-Tillotson, 14 Pioneers saw the floor. For the first time this season, someone other than Shahala Hawkins led Wayland in kills as Chelsey Driskill produced 14 on 19 attempts for a .737 hitting percentage. Hawkins, on the heels of her record-setting 33-kill performance against UT-Brownsville, wound up with nine kills on 18 swings and hit .389. Huston-Tillotson wound up with 20 kills and hit .028.

Wayland had 29 digs, led by Cat Wiechmann with seven and Mercades Torres with six. Cindy Horn and Emily Welch had three aces each, and six different Pioneers had one block assist apiece.
