Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City was upset city on Saturday night.
Immediately after the Wayland Baptist women picked up their first win of the season by knocking off No. 18 Oklahoma City University, the OCU men got some revenge by taking down the Pioneers in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener by the same score, 1-0.
"They tried harder than we did," said WBU coach
Cristhian Ospina, who applauded the Stars' effort.
Wayland (6-3 overall, 0-1 SAC) had won five in a row while the Stars (2-3-1, 1-0) had dropped their last two. But that didn't matter on Saturday.
The match's lone score came 26½ minutes in on a goal by OCU senior Ethan Berney, his first of the season, with an assist by Danny Frid.
"We came out flat, like always," Ospina said.
Wayland, which picked up its first win over OCU in five meetings last year, took 16 shots, including five on goal, compared to 13 for OCU, six of which were on goal.
"We didn't take advantage of our chances," Ospina said.
WBU's
David Neuberth got off four shots, two of which were on target.
Mamadou Sanon attempted three shots while
Yago Xavier,
Juan Sanchez and
Taval Whittaker shot twice apiece.
Vladimir Kalajdzic saved five shots.
The Pioneers had outscored their last five opponents by a combined margin of 19-2. All three of Wayland's losses this season have been by 1-0 counts.
The Pioneers will get a chance to start a new winning streak on Tuesday when they host No. 19 Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at Hilliard Field. The Drovers (7-1) have won their last six since suffering their lone loss to Kansas Wesleyan, 2-1 in overtime. USAO is averaging more than 4½ goals per match.
"They're the best team in the conference. If we play like we did tonight we'll lose again," Ospina said.
"We'll try to change some things. We just need to forget about this game and go to the next one."
