KEARNEY, Neb. – The No. 18 Wayland Baptist men's wrestling team had a slow start at the Midwest Duals, losing its first to duals to Bethany College and Hastings College, but the Pioneers finished strong Saturday, earning wins against Dakota Wesleyan and York College to close out the tournament.
The Pioneers bout with Bethany College was the only match that the Pioneers didn't look up to par. The Swedes took the first dual of the tournament, 28-15, only losing three matches to Wayland.
Victor Thomas recorded a pin three minutes into the 149-pound bout to give WBU its first points, but the Pioneers lost their next three matches to fall even further behind.
Mich Napier earned a 2-1 decision in the 184s, and
Jeremiah McCutcheon pinned Bethany's Mathew Holt in the heavyweight division to close out the dual.
In their second dual, the Pioneers lost a heart-breaker to Hastings College. After dropping the opening match,

Kyzer Delbusto, Napier pinning Coleman Westerby, and finally Joel Hernandez pinned
Nik Gates to cut WBU's lead to just two points, 24-22.
The dual came down to the winner of Pedro Garcia and
Travis Morgan in the heavy weight division. Wayland's two point lead was not enough as Garcia picked up a 6-1 decision to give Hastings a 25-24 win.
The Pioneers played to a different tune in their next match against Dakota Wesleyan, coming from behind to defeat Tigers, 28-18. Speller, Hart and Thomas gave Wayland a 13-10 lead, but the Tigers came roaring back with two major decisions and a pin to gain an 18-13 lead.
Napier earned a 4-1 decision in the 184s and Gates pinned his opponent to swing the lead back in favor of WBU, 22-18. The Tigers forfeited the final match, giving Wayland a 28-18 win.
In their final dual of the day, the Pioneers took advantage of a depleted York College team, defeating the Panthers, 42-13.
The Pioneers won six matches via forfeit, and McCutcheon won the heavyweight bout pin a minute and a half into the match to give Wayland a convincing win in its final dual of the day.
Wayland faces off with Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Jan. 23 before competing in the Natural State Tournament at Central Baptist College in Conway Ark. on Jan. 24. The Pioneers' next home dual is Feb. 3 against Northwest Technical College.
