Team Scores Individual ResultsLITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Wayland Baptist's swimmers held their own when the Pioneers went up against two established programs here Saturday.
"I thought we did great," Wayland coach Alyson Hannan said after the Pioneers took on NCAA Division I Arkansas-Little Rock and Division II Henderson State (Ark.).
Arriving in nearby Conway, Ark., Friday evening after a long nine-hour bus ride, the Pioneers were treated to dinner by St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the home church of Hannan when she spent four years as an assistant coach at Hendrix College.
"We really enjoyed that," Hannan said.
The Pioneers were able to hold a short work out at Hendrix's pool.
At the meet, Wayland's ninth-ranked men fell to Henderson State, 119-87, while the Pioneer women came up short of Henderson State, 141-44, and Arkansas-Little Rock, 160-39.
"Both of those schools have well-established programs," Hannan said. "I thought our women held their own, which is a very good thing, and our men could have possibly beaten Henderson if we had a couple of more guys. They have more numbers than we do."
Several Pioneers improved their previously-established national qualifying standards, and one,
Gabriel Phillips, put up a new qualifying standard in the 200 freestyle. Phillips posted a time of 1 minute, 47.67 seconds to finish second. Phillips also improved his standard in the 100 fly, which he won in 51.47.
Phillips also swam the lead leg in the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:37.21), in which he was joined by
Nathan McCormick,
Josiah Morales and
Hugo Gallegos.
Other first places were turned in by Morales in the 50 freestyle (21.58), McCormick in the 100 backstroke (55.74) and
Bjoern Globke in the 100 breaststroke (59.33).
"We didn't have as many qualify (for nationals) this time around, but a lot of kids bettered their times as far as seeding goes," Hannan said. "I thought we did a good job, especially after a 9-hour bus ride."
The Pioneers have only two competitions remaining in their season, both in Oklahoma City. Wayland is entered in the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational on Feb 13 and 14 followed by NAIA Nationals on March 4-7.
"Now we'll focus on our Oklahoma meet coming up before nationals. That will be our last chance at qualifying," Hannan said.
The coach said all of the WBU women she expects to qualify have done so, but a couple of men still need to meet standards.
"The main thing is improvement on our seed times, so we're going to really focus on that for the next two weeks."
