Rossanna Ramos and
Shahala Hawkins have been recognized by the Sooner Athletic Conference as women's volleyball Defender and Attacker of the Week, respectively.
Ramos and Hawkins helped the Pioneers (21-5 overall, 10-1 SAC) to three road wins in as many outings last week. Wayland swept both Bacone and John Brown in SAC matches then defeated College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in four in a non-conference contest.
Ramos, a 5-foot-7 junior defensive specialist from Montverde, Fla., recorded two of her highest dig totals of the season, 23 and 25, in back-to-back matches. She totaled 60 digs for the week (6.0 per game) and committed just one serve receive error in 91 attempts (.989) while also posting a .938 serve percentage.
A 6-foot senior middle from Denver City, Hawkins averaged 5.50 kills and boasted a hitting percentage of .427. She had season-high 30 kills against Ozarks and also recorded 18 digs, three aces, five solo blocks and five block-assists.
For the season, Hawkins ranks second in the NAIA in kills per game (4.97), fourth in hitting percentage (.402) and 12th in blocks per game (1.36).
It's the second time in three weeks Ramos and Hawkins have been recognized by the SAC. For the season, Hawkins has been named conference Attacker of the Week five times.
The Pioneers, who are ranked the equivalent of 33
rd in the NAIA, have won seven straight matches and reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in the last nine years. They complete a six-match road swing by taking on West Texas A&M in Canyon at 7 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Mid-America Christian (12-9, 3-8) at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 23 Oklahoma City (15-5, 10-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday in a match that should determine the SAC regular-season champion. OCU defeated Wayland on Sept. 26 in Oklahoma City, 16-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20.Â
