No upset for SAGU this time as Pioneers roll

Box Score Last season, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University volleyball team walked out of Hutcherson Center with an upset victory.

The Pioneers didn't let it happen again on Saturday morning.

Wayland Baptist recorded a solid 25-15, 25-17, 26-24 defeat of the Lady Lions in a Sooner Athletic Conference match.

The win, which followed a four-set victory on Friday over Texas Wesleyan, gave Wayland (16-5, 6-1 SAC) a pair of triumphs over two of the top-tier SAC teams.

Against SAGU (12-5, 4-2), Wayland held the upper-hand in almost all statistical categories, including blocks where the Pioneers ended with eight compared to one for the Lady Lions. Shahala Hawkins and Chelsey Driskill recorded three block assists each, while Mallorie Ellis and Jessica Stohlmann had one solo and one block assist apiece.

Hawkins' 12 kills and .462 hitting percentage paced Wayland, which hit .241 as a team. Driskill added seven kills while Cindy Horn and Katie Inman tacked on six apiece. Hawkins also chalked up three of Wayland's five aces.

Rossanna Ramos dug a team-best 19 balls, while Tyler Gasaloga contributed 18 assists, Emily Welch had 13.

Wayland controlled the first two sets, while SAGU got on track in the third and led early. The Pioneers then took control, but the Lady Lions fought back and had set point, 24-23. WBU coach Jim Giacomazzi then called back-to-back timeouts, and his team responded by winning the next three points and taking the match.

Driskill gave Wayland the first point on a kill, then after a ball-handling error against SAGU, Stohlmann ended it with a ball that skipped over the net.

The Pioneers now hit the road for their next six matches, starting next Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma against St. Gregory's and Southwestern Christian. Wayland's next home match is Oct. 23 against Mid-America Christian, followed by No. 23 Oklahoma City on Oct. 24 in what is shaping up to be a battle for the SAC's No. 1 playoff seed.
