MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The No. 19 Wayland Baptist men's wrestling team showed progress Saturday in the Bacone Warrior Duals, winning two of their three matches.
Coach
Matt Oney was happy with the team's performance and satisfied with giving the wrestlers more experience on the road.
"Our young guys got some experience," Oney said. "I was less impressed with the results and more with the improvement."
The Pioneers showed their improvement by defeating the Ottawa University (Kan.) Braves in their first match, 33-19.
"We wrestled Ottawa really well," Oney said. "It was a good start and we got our feet on the ground."
Next, the Pioneers faced the Bethany College (Kan.) Swedes and dominated the matches, winning 36-9.
"We had a better performance. The guys were more aggressive," Oney said. "The performances kept improving."
Last, the Pioneers squared off against the No. 18-ranked Doane College (Neb.) Tigers. The Pioneers lost that one, 27-12.
Despite the loss, Oney was impressed with the effort the Pioneers gave and the progress they made.
"Overall, based on where are now compared to where we were a month ago, we're making progress," Oney said. "It was a good, productive day."
Individual results for the matches were not immediately available.
Next for Pioneers is the Midland Warrior Duals Nov.20 in Fremont, Neb.
