Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – John Brown scored on a 40-yard shot with 40 seconds left in overtime to end the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team's season in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament here Friday evening, 1-0.
John Brown's Ryan Williams, a freshman from Hawaii, put in his fifth goal of the season nine minutes and 20 seconds into the first extra period. It was unassisted.
The Pioneers (7-8-2), seeded seventh in the eight-team tournament, played the second-seeded Golden Eagles (13-5-1) even over the first 90 minutes. Wayland was just 40 seconds from what would have been its fourth double-overtime match of the season when Williams made the game-ender.
Wayland was credited with just one shot on-goal, by
D'Angelo Garcia, out of eight shots total. John Brown ended with eight shots on-goal out of 14 attempts.
Pioneer freshman goalkeeper
Palemon Plancarte managed to save the first seven on-target shots by the Golden Eagles, but couldn't stop No. 8.
After being held scoreless just once in their first 14 matches of the season, the Pioneers were shut out in their last three outings.
Wayland, which dropped its final four matches of the season, was in the playoffs for the fifth straight season and looking for its second post-season win.
John Brown advances to play third-seeded Southwestern Christian (14-5), a 4-3 winner over Texas Wesleyan, in Monday's semifinals. In the other semi, top-seeded USAO (17-2), which beat St. Gregory's, 1-0, meets fourth-seeded Oklahoma City (7-9), a 3-1 victor over SAGU.
The semifinal winners qualify for the championship match on Nov. 12, with the winner qualifying for the NAIA National Championships.
