Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist won the first set but Oklahoma City came roaring back to win the next three as the Stars knocked off the No. 20 Pioneers in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball action here Saturday, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
The loss ended a five-match win streak for Wayland (14-4, 4-1 SAC) and leaves the Pioneers looking up at both the Stars (9-3, 4-0) and Southwestern Assemblies of God University (12-3, 4-0). WBU plays SAGU at 11 a.m. Saturday as part of homecoming activities, after the Pioneers host Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Friday and a non-conference match against Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
On Saturday against OCU, which is ranked the equivalent of 31
st in the NAIA Top 25, Wayland was led in kills by
Cindy Horn with 14, followed by
Shahala Hawkins with 13. The Pioneers hit .124 as a team, opening by hitting .393 in the first set but just -.045 in the fourth. OCU, which hit .211 for the match with 46 kills, was led by Stefani Nell and Manon Soraru with 12 kills each.
Tyler Gasaloga, in her second match back since the first week of the season, recorded 19 assists with
Cat Wiechmann getting 13. Wiechmann led the team with 17 digs while
Rossanna Ramos had 13.
Emily Welch missed her second straight match with an illness.
OCU held a 10-5 advantage in blocks and a 7-3 edge in aces.
Wayland, which was coming off a dominating win Friday night over Mid-America Christian, had won eight straight matches against OCU, the last seven in straight sets. The Stars' last victory over the Pioneers was during the 2010-11 season.
