Box Score Twin sisters Shayla and
Shawna Monreal combined for 28 points to lead No. 23 Wayland Baptist to a 77-41 Sooner Athletic Conference win over Southwestern Christian on Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center.
The Queens (10-4, 5-1 SAC) came out scorching with a barrage of 3-pointers from both of the Monreals, who finished 6-of-12 from behind the from the three-point line. Shayla wounded up with 15 points while Shawna added 13.
"Shayla and Shawna came in and shot really well," Coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "They have a good shooter's mentality."
Also for the Queens, junior
Jade Jones ended with a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while freshman
Maci Merket scored 10 points.
The Eagles (6-10, 3-3) trailed 17-12 after the first quarter and never got closer than that the rest of the way.
Wayland's bench outscored SCU, 38-17, and the Eagles didn't score a single fast-break basket, compared to 16 points in that department for the Flying Queens.
Robertson-Ellis was most impressed with the Queens' ball handling and decision-making as they only turned the ball over nine times. That's their lowest total this season.
"We had under 10 turnovers today," she said. "We took good care of the ball today."
She also took pride in her team out-rebounding the Eagles, 47-38.
"That's our main focus," the coach said. "We want to out-rebound every team, and we've done that every game in conference."
The Queens now go on a four-game road trip. The first game will be against the Texas Wesleyan Rams (7-8, 2-4) at 6 p.m. Thursday in what figures to be another tough match-up.
"Texas Wesleyan is a tough team despite their record," Robertson-Ellis said. "We're going to have to work hard, and if we do that we'll be OK."
