Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY — Following Saturday's victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God, Wayland Baptist coach Alesha Robertson-Ellis said Thursday night's Sooner Athletic Conference match-up between her 21st-ranked Flying Queens and 14th-ranked Oklahoma City University would "show what we are made of." The Flying Queens showed they were ready for the challenge by handily defeating the Stars, 82-67.
The win extended Wayland's winning streak to nine and sent the Flying Queens (13-4, 8-1 SAC) to the top of the conference standings.
From the jump, the Queens took control with a 3-pointer from junior Shayla Monreal. The Stars (11-5, 8-1) tied the game, 5-5, before the Queens went on a game-changing 14-2 run to close the first quarter.
The Stars fought their way back in the second quarter, scoring 30 points and closing the gap to one at halftime, 38-37. OCU junior Daniella Wallen scored 13 of her 28 points in the period.
The Stars, however, didn't get any closer in the second half.
The Queens began the third quarter similar to the first with a 19-5 run that proved too large a deficit for the Stars to overcome.
Four Flying Queens – Shayla with 17 points, Stephanie Afunugo with 16, Shawna Monreal with 11 and Krystal Forthan with 10 – reached double figures. Junior Jade Jones scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds, and senior Laura Castillo scored four points while dishing out a season-high nine assists.
The Flying Queens will finish off their four-game road trip at 1 p.m. Saturday against Southwestern Christian (9-10, 6-3), which defeated University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Thursday, 59-50. Wayland and Southwestern Christian met Jan. 16 and the Flying Queens routed the Lady Eagles, 77-41.
(NOTE: Afunugo recently became the 48th player to join the Flying Queens' 1,000-point club, joining teammate Laura Castillo.)
