Flying Queens mount comeback to sweep Lady Eagles

Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — Down by as many as 14 points in the game, the No. 21 Wayland Baptist Flying Queens battled back in the fourth quarter to complete a season sweep of Southwestern Christian and extend their winning streak to 10 games Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference play, 62-54.

When these teams met Jan. 16 in Plainview, Wayland (14-4, 9-1 SAC) controlled the entire game and routed the Eagles (9-11, 6-4), 71-44.

Saturday's game was much closer.

"We came out a little slow and didn't shoot the ball," WBU coach Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "It was a nightmare."

The Lady Eagles were aggressive with the Flying Queens and forced a 15-15 tie at the end of the first quarter. They made a 12-4 run at the beginning of the second and took a 27-19 lead.

The Flying Queens found themselves down at halftime 34-23 after shooting only 25 percent in the first half and scoring just nine points in the second quarter.

"If we would've hit a few shots we would have been OK," Robertson-Ellis said. "One of our worst shooting days..."

A late third-quarter run from the Flying Queens, which was triggered by back-to-back 3-pointers from senior Laura Castillo, made for another tie, 48-48, heading into the final period. Castillo contributed eight points in the period.

"Laura is one of the best leaders we have," Robertson-Ellis said. "She knocked down some big shots."

An intentional foul on Lady Eagle Andi McGill gave Wayland senior Stephanie Afunugo two free throws. She made 1-of-2 to give the Queens their first lead since the first half. WBU held onto the lead the rest of the way and completed the rally.

Afunugo and junior Shawna Monreal came up big for the Flying Queens, each netting 21 points. Afunugo added 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Monreal totaled five assists and two steals.

Also for the Queens, sophomore Nina Sato netted six points and grabbed eight boards.

"Nina had one of her best games today," Robertson-Ellis said.

Robertson-Ellis was proud of her starters' effort in the last of a four-game road trip.

"Our starting five had a nice game today," she said.

Junior Lady Eagle Maranda Janz, who has been on a scoring tear in the last three games averaging 22 points, matched that total again to lead all scorers.

Wayland's 10-game win streak is its longest since the Flying Queens won their first 11 of the 1999-2000 season.

The Flying Queens come back home for a 6 p.m. game Thursday against Bacone (6-12, 2-7), which played Texas Wesleyan later Saturday. The Flying Queens defeated Bacone on the road way back on Dec. 5, 67-56.
