Results ABILENE – Wayland Baptist's swimming and diving teams experienced an eventful evening here Friday as the Pioneers competed against Texas-Permian Basin and McMurry in a tri-meet.
"Overall we had a good meet," summed up Wayland coach Alyson Hannan.
WBU's men's team, tied for third in the NAIA polls, came up short of UTPB, 119-78, but they bested McMurry, 109-74.
The Pioneer women's team, tied for sixth in the NAIA, had similar outcomes, falling to UTPB, 105-91, and out-swimming McMurry, 123-65. Wayland was able to close the gap considerably on UTPB from when the teams met to begin the season. The Falcons won then, 130-72.
As for WBU highlights at the competition,
Maria Barrera, a sophomore from Bogota, Colombia, broke the school record in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 59.50 seconds. The old record was 2:00.48.
Hannan said both the WBU men's and women's 400 freestyle relays dominated the competition by 5-6 seconds, which was very pleasing for the coach.
The Pioneers next head to the Trinity Shootout in San Antonio to compete Nov. 18-20.
"Next week in San Antonio will be a really big meet for us," Hannan said. "We've been training really hard and focusing on being prepared for that. We expect to get a lot of national cuts.
"I have high expectations."
