Flying Queens begin with a bang

Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – Starting off the season with a bang, Wayland Baptist's 22nd-ranked Flying Queens defeated the University of the Southwest here Tuesday night, 89-53.

Head coach of the women's basketball team, Alesha Robertson-Ellis said things went pretty well for the first game.

"It gave us a good chance to get the freshmen some more experience, and the upperclassmen really stepped up and set the tone for the game quickly," Robertson-Ellis said.

"Tonight we threw in some different defenses and the team really executed them well. They also ran the ball and that was good."

Sophomore Maci Merket led the team in scoring, putting 17 points on the board. She was followed by Nina Sato who had 15 points. Senior Jade Jones ended with 13 points and was the team's top rebounder with eight. Shawna Monreal added 11 points.

Other statistics were not immediately available.

As the season progresses, Robertson-Ellis wants to focus the Queens on executing the offense.

"We have to work a lot on the small things, and that will just get better over the season," she said.

The Flying Queens make their home debut on Thursday in a doubleheader with the Pioneers against Northern New Mexico College. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in Hutcherson Center.
