Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back on the way to a 100-65 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over No. 22 Wayland Baptist here Saturday afternoon.
"OCU came out and shot the ball super," Wayland coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "They are a great team and we just didn't have an answer for them today."
The Flying Queens (5-2, 1-1) especially had no answer for OCU's Danielas as the No. 19 Stars (8-1, 2-0 SAC) got 31 points from Daniela Wallen and 24 from Daniela Galindo. Wallen went into the game as the NAIA's fourth-leading scorer averaging almost 22 ppg.
"Bo (OCU coach Bo Overton) has done a good job with his team and they executed very well," Robertson-Ellis said.
Wayland's leading scorer was freshman
Kendrick Clark with a career-high 14 points and
Maci Merket with 11.
"I'm proud of our young group. Kendrick and Maci came in and showed some good minutes," Robertson-Ellis said. "Morgan handled the ball well, and although her shots weren't going in today I'm glad she's learning to take them."
Jade Jones added nine points to go along with 12 rebounds as she just missed a double-double.
"Jade played hard and did good on the boards," Robertson-Ellis said.
The Flying Queens, who trailed 54-33 at the half, shot just 32 percent (23-of-73) compared to OCU's 62 percent (38-of-62). The Stars lead the NAIA in field goal percentage, shooting almost 52 percent for the season.
Both teams made 11 3-pointers, but it took Wayland 35 attempts compared to just 21 for the Stars (52.4 percent). The Stars also were sharp at the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-14 (93 percent). WBU made 8-of-11 foul shots (73 percent).
"We have to continue to work on both sides of the floor and take the good and learn from the bad," Robertson-Ellis said. "Overall, we have to get more aggressive and physical and play smarter."
Wayland held a 38-37 rebounding edge and turned the ball over 18 times, four more than OCU.
The Flying Queens now take a month-long break from conference play, next hosting Sul Ross State (4-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
"We just have to get back in the gym and continue to work on the small things and get ready for Sul Ross on Saturday," Robertson-Ellis said. "It will be good for us to have this whole next week to practice. Sul Ross is going to come in ready to beat us, and we have to play better in order to beat them."
The game is being promoted as "Pack the Hutch" with special prizes, fan contests and holiday music. Fans are encouraged to wear ugly Christmas sweaters for a chance to win a special prize.
