Ethan Percell hit a grand slam as Wayland Baptist exploded for a season-high 20 runs before
Taylor Bridges pitched a three-hitter when the Pioneers picked up two more wins and ran their win streak to double-digits on Friday afternoon at Wilder Field, defeating Houston-Victoria, 20-5, and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), 5-2.
The seven-inning games were part of a three-team, two-day "classic" schedule which also saw MidAmerica Nazarene topple Houston-Victoria in the day's opener, 21-1.
The three teams do it again starting at noon Saturday when Wayland (15-3) takes on MidAmerica Nazarene (8-1). MNU and Houston-Victoria (1-10) do battle in game 2 before the Pioneers and Jaguars take the field for the finale starting around 5 p.m.
Wayland has won 10 straight games, picking up its 10
th while handing MidAmerica Nazarene its first setback of the young season.
In that 5-2 game, Bridges (4-1) was masterful as he gave up only three singles and one earned run while striking out seven and walking two. He threw 86 pitches in a battle of left-handers that saw MNU's Emilio Gonzalez (2-1) rock along rather smoothly until the sixth.

Gregg Veneklasen got things rolling with a one-out single. One out later,
Alex Mumm doubled to left-center before designated hitter
Ernesto Lizardi's triple to right field scored them both. Lizardi then came home on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
The Pioneers scored their first two runs in the fourth when in successive at-bats Veneklasen doubled, Doyle singled and Mumm tripled – all to right field. Doyle's and Mumm's hits both drove in runs.
The first game saw Wayland defeat Houston-Victoria (1-10) for the fourth time in five meetings this season, having taken three from the Jaguars in a season-opening road series.
Wayland pounded out 26 hits off of four UHV pitchers, with Doyle picking up five hits – all singles – along with four runs and three RBI.
Brayden Blackwell also was perfect at the plate in four at-bats, including one of WBU's four doubles.
Will Bass, Vallance and Percell contributed three hits each, including designated hitter Percell's grand slam to center field as part of a six-run sixth.
Wayland also scored six in the third, helping out emergency starter
Jonathan Frost who took the mound in place of ace
Tyler Adams. Frost (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out four and walking three.
Kevin Torres finished off the final 2 2/3, allowing three hits and one run with one strikeout and one walk.
