Pairings set for SAC Basketball Tournaments

Women's Bracket
Men's Bracket
Wayland Baptist's top-seeded Flying Queens will play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday while the Pioneers will play the final game of the day at 9:45 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's and Men's Basketball Tournaments. Both events will be held at Sheaffer Center Gymnasium on the campus of Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie.

All Wayland games will be carried live on 1090-AM and 1590-AM.

The tourneys begin Wednesday when two women's and two men's first-round games are played between the four lowest-seeded teams in each of the 10-school events.

In the quarterfinals, the Flying Queens (22-4, 17-1) – who won the SAC regular-season championship for the first time in the program's 21-year association with the league – will play the winner between eighth-seeded Bacone (9-18, 5-13) and ninth-seeded Science and Arts of Oklahoma (5-18, 4-14).

If the Queens win, they'll advance to the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday against either fourth-seeded John Brown (Ark.) or the fifth-seeded host team, SAGU. The women's championship is at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Wayland has won 18 straight games.

In the men's tournament, Wayland (18-11, 10-8) is the No. 6 seed and will play third-seeded Oklahoma City University (15-9, 12-6) in the quarterfinals. The Pioneers and 25th-ranked Stars split during the regular season, with each team winning at home. Both teams knocked off third-ranked, top-seeded Texas Wesleyan last week, with Wayland topping the Rams on Saturday, 87-75, after OCU defeated Wesleyan on Thursday, 74-73.

The Wayland-OCU winner advances to the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday against either second-seeded Mid-America Christian, seventh-seeded SAGU or 10th-seeded Bacone. The championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Winners of the tournaments advance to their respective NAIA National Championships March 16-22 in Kansas City, Mo., for the men and in Independence, Mo., for the women. While the Flying Queens have secured an at-large bid  to nationals regardless of their results in Waxahachie, the Pioneers must repeat as conference tournament champions to secure a trip to Kansas City.
