Box Score ODESSA – Wayland Baptist scored four runs in its first at-bat and added four more over the next eight innings as the Pioneers – in their final tune-up prior to the start of Sooner Athletic Conference play – defeated the University of Texas of the Permian Basin here Tuesday afternoon, 8-5.
The Pioneers (17-4) recorded 14 hits, three by
Alex Mumm who also had three RBI and scored a run. Wayland got two hits apiece from its first three batters:
Will Bass,
Aaron Vallance and
Gregg Veneklasen. Veneklasen had a solo home run – his team-high seventh of the season – while Bass doubled and tripled.
WBU used five pitchers, starting with
Mason Taylor who went 3 1/3 innings when Wayland built a 6-2 lead. Taylor gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout and four walks. He gave way to
Jonathan Frost (2-0), who picked up the win after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit with one strikeout.
Kevin Torres,
Matt Flores and
Paxton Bartley all pitched one inning apiece, giving up a hit apiece. Bartley, who fanned two and walked none, earned his first save of the season.
Jake Albert (1-2) took the loss as the Pioneers blistered him for five runs (four earned) on seven hits in the first frame.
The Falcons dropped to 7-11.
The Pioneers, ranked the equivalent of 40
th in the NAIA, next head to Muskogee, Okla., to open SAC play against conference newcomer Bacone College (1-10). The teams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday before meeting in a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
