Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. –
Jordie Henry threw a one-hitter to lead Wayland Baptist to a 3-0 shutout of Dickinson State, N.D., as part of the Tucson Invitational here Wednesday. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Blue Hawks prevailed, 5-2.
Henry, a sophomore from Amarillo and a graduate of Randall High School, struck out nine and walked just one in tossing his one-hit shutout. The Blue Hawks' lone hit was a one-out single by Sagan Osborne in the top of the fourth inning. On the next batter, the Pioneers turned a 4-6-3 double-play to end the inning.
The hit prevented Henry, who delivered 88 pitches including 59 strikes, from throwing the seventh no-hitter in program history, and the second this month after
Jonathan Frost's on March 5.
Offensively, the Pioneers (24-7) scored once in each of the second, third and sixth innings as they ended with five hits, all by different players.
Will Bass,
Gregg Veneklasen and Ernesto Lizardo recorded one RBI each.
Dickinson State (11-13) was charged with five errors.
In the second game, the Blue Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to win, 5-2. The Pioneers stranded 13 runners.
Wayland wound up with six hits, two each by
Alex Mumm and
Hector Romero, against four DSU pitchers.
Aaron Vallance and
Taylor Grady tallied an RBI.
Frost (3-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in three innings.
Kyle Parriera and
Kevin Torres finished up on the mound.
Four Blue Hawks pitchers combined to record seven strikeouts while walking nine.
Wayland next takes on the Mayville State, N.D., Comets (8-10) in another doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Thursday before winding up the tourney in a single game against Valley City State at 9 a.m. Friday.
