On the heels of throwing a one-hitter, Wayland Baptist sophomore
Jordie Henry has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Â
A 6-foot-5, 195-pound sophomore right-hander from Amarillo and Randall High School, Henry started the second game of the Pioneers' six games last week at the Tucson Invitational in Arizona. Facing Dickinson State, N.D., Henry struck out nine and walked just one as the Pioneers shut out the Blue Hawks over seven innings, 3-0.
Â
Dickinson State's lone hit was a one-out single in the top of the fourth. On the next batter, the Pioneers turned a 4-6-3 double-play to end the inning. The hit prevented Henry, who delivered 59 strikes among his 88 pitches, from throwing the seventh no-hitter in program history and the second this month after
Jonathan Frost's on March 5.
Â
Henry, who matched a team season-high with his 9 Ks, improved to 5-1.
Â
Henry is the third Pioneer honored by the SAC this season. Frost was named Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter while
Caleb Davidson was recognized as conference Player of the Week on Feb. 22.
Â
Ranked the equivalent of 36
th in the NAIA, the Pioneers (26-8) host Lubbock Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday before entertaining No. 24 USAO in a three-game weekend series, playing a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday followed by a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
This week's SAC Baseball Player of the Week is Jared Baker from Oklahoma City University. The junior from Edmond, Okla., hit .588 with a 1.059 slugging percentage in a 4-1 week against Dallas Christian and Southwestern Christian. Baker was 10-for-17 with five runs scored, three doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBI as the No. 15 Stars improved to 21-9 on the year.
