After throwing the sixth no-hitter in Wayland Baptist history,
Jonathan Frost has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Frost, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Alpine, picked up two wins last week, including a nine-inning no-hitter in Wayland's 8-1 win Saturday over Bacone College to complete the Pioneers' SAC-opening series sweep in Muskogee, Okla.
Â
Against the Warriors, Frost struck out three and walked two. Bacone scored its lone run in the seventh inning following a hit batsman, wild pitch, walk and two-out ground-out.
Â
"He threw very well. He was in command of his pitches (fastball, curve and change-up) all day long," Wayland coach
Brad Bass said. "I hate to say it was easy, but he really cruised pretty much the whole day. There really were only two reasonably hard-hit balls and there weren't any hard plays."
Â
It was Wayland's first no-hitter since Tom Bailey tossed one four years ago, and the Pioneers' first nine-inning no-hitter since Daniel Franklin's 13 years ago.
Â
Frost (3-0) also picked up the win when the Pioneers defeated Texas-Permian Basin, 8-5, on Tuesday. He allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout and no walk in 22/3 innings.
Â
Frost and the Pioneers (20-4), ranked the equivalent of 40
th in the NAIA, host Lubbock Christian at 6 p.m. today at Wilder Field. The game was scheduled for Tuesday but moved up due to rain in the forecast.
Â
The SAC Baseball Player of the Week is Yariel Gonzalez of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The senior third baseman from San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, went 8-for-15 for a .533 average with eight runs, three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.Â
