Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY –
Tyler Adams picked up his ninth win of the season to lead Wayland Baptist to a 5-2 victory over Oklahoma City in the opening game of a Sooner Athletic Conference series here Saturday afternoon. The Stars bounced back in game two, taking it 6-2.
The Pioneers (36-14, 12-8 SAC) and Stars (32-16, 13-7) will settle the series in game 3 beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday. The series was pushed back one day due to weather-related issues.
Adams (9-1) allowed only three hits while striking out eight and walking just one in six innings.
Kevin Torres relieved to start the seventh and retired the Stars in order to secure the win.
Wayland produced a dozen hits in support of Adams, with five players –
Brayden Blackwell,
Gregg Veneklasen,
Alex Mumm,
Caleb Davidson and
Ernesto Lizardi – getting two hits apiece. Blackwell had two RBIs and hit a solo home run to start a three-run third inning. Second baseman
Taylor Grady scored twice.
In game two, the Pioneers were limited to three hits by OCU pitcher Mark Simon (6-4, who struck out 14.
The game was tied at 1-1 going into the sixth inning when the Stars broke open the game by scoring five runs. It started with back-to-back doubles off Wayland starter
Jordie Henry (7-3), who then gave the ball to
Mason Taylor. A sacrifice bunt and two walks (one intentional) preceded a bases-clearing triple before an RBI-double ended the scoring.
Jonathan Frost replaced Taylor and got the Pioneers out of the inning.
Wayland's lone run was a two-out, full-count, solo home run by
Jake Doyle in the fourth.
The games are the next-to-last regular-season series of the season for Wayland, which returns to Oklahoma City to take on Mid-America Christian next weekend after a single game Tuesday at Lubbock Christian.
