Box Score GRAND PRAIRIE – Texas Wesleyan completed a series sweep of 22
nd-ranked Wayland Baptist on Saturday, winning the third game of the Sooner Athletic Conference matchup, 10-0. The game ended after 6½ innings on the 10-run rule.
After not being shut out all season, the Pioneers (32-12, 9-6 SAC) suffered their second straight blanking at the hands of the Rams (27-14, 11-4), who have won a dozen straight games. The losses dropped Wayland into fifth place in the SAC standings, although the Pioneers are just two games behind league-leading and 12
th-ranked Oklahoma City (29-12, 10-3).
Wayland plays it final four home games of the regular-season next week, first taking on Texas-Permian Basin in a non-conference game at noon Tuesday then returning to SAC action on the weekend against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (13-30, 3-10). The Pioneers and Lions meet in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday followed by a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Wayland winds up the regular season with road series against OCU and Mid-America Christian (15-20, 5-10) on either side of a game at Lubbock Christian.
After falling on Friday 6-2 and 5-0, the Pioneers were looking to get out of their offensive funk Saturday. It didn't happen as Wayland dropped three straight for the first time all season.
The Pioneers were limited to five hits by Yancey Stephen (7-1), the third Rams pitcher to throw a complete game against WBU this weekend. Stephen struck out seven and walked none.
Jordie Henry (4-2) was strapped with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) with three strikeouts, two walks and two wild pitches in four innings.
Kevin Torres came in and recorded two outs, allowing a run on a pair of hits, before
Paxton Bartley gave up the final two runs on two hits in 1 2/3. The Rams ended with 11 hits; all but two were singles.
WBU was hurt by four fielding errors.
The Rams scored in all but two innings.
