Results MIDLAND – Wayland Baptist picked up a couple of new national qualifiers and just missed several others as the fourth-ranked Pioneers went against Texas-Permian Basin and Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at the City of Midland Aquatics Center.
"It was a pretty good meet," Wayland coach Alyson Hannan said.
In time trials, the women's 800 freestyle relay team of
Maria Barrera,
Ayrial Hiracheta,
Deandre Small and
Andrea Bond qualified for nationals in 8:48.17. And, freshman
Alex Santarriaga – competing in just his second collegiate meet – made the national cut in the 200 butterfly in 2:01.44.
"We had other kids who just missed their (national cut) times," Hannan said.
Freshman
Jessica Gryder clocked her best time in the 500 freestyle (6:07.07).
In team results, Wayland's men and women lost to UTPB while the men defeated Southwestern and the women lost by 12, due in large part, Hannan said, to depth.
The Pioneers have one last chance to qualify for nationals, set for March 1-4 in Columbus, Ga., at a meet hosted by SMU in Southlake on Feb. 4.
"We need to get anybody who hasn't qualified, qualified," Hannan said. "That's a good facility and we'll see really good competition from (NCAA) Division I teams.
"We'll be ready to go for that meet."
