Jade Jones has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her 46-point performance last weekend.
A 6-foot forward from Georgetown, Jones turned in one of the greatest performances in the storied history of the Flying Queens on Saturday in Hutcherson Center, scoring 46 points in a 100-72 win over 18
th-ranked John Brown University. After missing Thursday's game with an injured foot (and still wearing a protective boot off the court), Jones made 21-of-29 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws in coming within three points of matching the all-time single-game scoring record of 49 points held by Sharla Harrison, the program's all-time leading scorer.
Jones had a chance to go for the record but dribbled the last few seconds off the clock.
Jones, whose previous career-best was 27 points earlier this season against Sul Ross State, also tied for the team-lead in rebounds with nine plus had five assists and a block.
"Jade came out red-hot and had an amazing game. I was really proud of her and her teammates," Wayland coach
Alesha Robertson-Ellis said. "Knowing it was a big game, Jade came ready to play and stepped up to the challenge. She ran the floor well, let the game come to her and made smart decisions. Her teammates did a nice job of getting her the ball, and Jade did a nice job of using her strengths."
It's the first SAC Player of the Week honor for a Flying Queen this season. Jones now is eligible for NAIA National Player of the Week honors.
The Queens (12-2, 3-1 SAC), ranked the equivalent of 27
th, have won seven straight games. They look for No. 8 in Oklahoma City on Thursday night against Mid-America Christian (12-3, 3-1) before returning to the Hutch at 1 p.m. Saturday to host No. 8 Oklahoma City (13-1, 4-0), winners of 12 straight.
