Wayland coach
Brad Bass said freshman pitcher
Broedy Burris pitched seven "really strong innings" in Saturday's second game, scattering three runs. "He pitched really, really well," Bass said.
Jonathan Frost finished up the nine-inning contest. "He also had a good outing," Bass said. "We really need him this season, and today he started looking like the guy we saw this fall."
In the opener, WBU's
Gregg Veneklasen homered twice after going deep once Friday and giving him five on the season. Freshman
Bryson Calaway "pitched well" but didn't get solid defensive support, Bass said.
"We made three errors, but that doesn't tell the whole story. We battled and got ourselves back into it.
Taylor Bridges came in and did what we needed him to do, we just didn't do what we needed to do behind him. A play here, a catch there would have made a difference."
Wayland got out of the weekend with two wins in the three-game series, evening its record at 5-5. McMurry, seeing its first action of the season, is 1-2.
"Today's second game was really encouraging, probably our best-played game so far," Bass said. "It was really hot, and those guys did a good job coming back after dropping the first one."
Now 5-5 on the season, Wayland next hosts Peru State (Neb.) in a pair of doubleheaders at Wilder Field starting at 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
