Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – The 16
th-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens' impressive 14-game winning streak came to a screeching halt here Saturday afternoon at the hands of No. 20 John Brown University, 85-69.
Wayland Baptist (19-3, 10-2 SAC) handily defeated JBU (17-6, 9-3) a few weeks ago in Plainview, outscoring the Eagles, 100-72. John Brown turned the tables Saturday in the NAIA Network Division I Women's Game of the Week.
Wayland had a slight lead early in the game until JBU tied it up, 11-11 about midway through the first quarter. The Golden Eagles then started to lengthen their lead, and at halftime held a 10-point lead, 42-32.
John Brown increased its lead to 25 points several times in the third quarter.
The Flying Queens were able to cut the margin to 12 in the fourth, even outscoring JBU 19-13 in the period, but couldn't conquer the deficit.
Shots just weren't falling for the Flying Queens, who made 25-of-68 field goals (37 percent), including 9-of-28 3-pointers (32 percent). John Brown finished at 47 percent from the field (27-of-57).
Shayla Monreal put up 15 points for the Flying Queens while
Maci Merket added 14. They were the only two players that reached double figures for WBU.
Kendrick Clark totaled nine while
Jade Jones,
Shawna Monreal and
Deborah VanDijk all contributed eight. Jones also brought down 11 rebounds.
Several of JBU's players, in particular Baily Cameron, and Jana Schammel, really hurt Wayland, putting up 20 and 18 points, respectively.
The loss dropped Wayland a game behind No. 7 Oklahoma City in the league standings and a game ahead of John Brown (17-6, 9-3).
After two weeks on the road, the Flying Queens will be back home Thursday, Feb. 9 to host fourth-place Mid-America Christian at 6 p.m. in Hutcherson Center. MACU (16-7, 7-5) defeated Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Saturday, 70-63. Wayland defeated the Lady Evangels earlier this season on the road, 101-88.
