Box Score 3 CHICKASHA, Okla. – The Wayland Baptist baseball team's Spring Break trip to Oklahoma proved less than productive as the Pioneers were swept in a Sooner Athletic Conference series by 17
th-ranked University of Science and Arts. The Drovers won Friday's doubleheader, 21-1 and 6-1 then prevailed on Saturday, 9-3.
The outcomes leave Wayland with a 13-16 overall record and 1-5 in the conference. USAO improves to 22-9 and 6-3.
The Pioneers couldn't get anything going Friday as they were held to a single run in both games.
In the opener, USAO scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead. Wayland finally got on the board in its last at-bat in the seventh – on an RBI-single by
Caleb Davidson that scored
Gaby De La Cruz – to prevent the shutout.
Wayland finished with seven hits, including two each by
Hector Romero and
Dylan Norris. USAO pounded 16 hits off four Wayland pitchers, half off starter
Matt Flores (3-3) in 2 2/3 innings. The Drovers' Francis Ventura (4-0) struck out 11 batters in six innings, the third time in six outings he's recorded double-digit strikeouts.
Friday's nightcap started out badly for Wayland as the Drovers scored three in the first and two more in the second. The Pioneers got their lone run across in the fourth with designated hitter De La Cruz again scoring, this time on an RBI-single by
Juan Ponce.
WBU produced eight hits, just one fewer than USAO, but committed three errors to the Drovers' none.
Broedy Burris (4-3) took the loss, lasting 5 1/3 innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with five walks and two strikeouts. USAO pitchers Trevor Settles and Ruddy Estrella combined to strikeout eight.
Davidson and
Will Bass had two hits each to pace Wayland at the plate.
On Saturday, the Pioneers initially had things going their way, scoring an early run and leading 3-2 going into the sixth innings. But USAO scored four in the sixth and three in the seventh and went on to win it, 9-3.
The Drovers tallied 17 hits, including 10 off freshman
Kyle Eifert (2-1), who suffered his first loss in his 10
th collegiate appearance. He struck out four and walked two in 5 1/3.
Collin Isbell gave up two runs and four hits in 2/3 of an inning before
Nicholas Moore finished, allowing the final two runs and three hits in two frames.
Bass and catcher
Ernesto Lizardi got two hits each for Wayland, and Bass – who homered and doubled – scored two of his team's three runs.
Wayland will be in Shawnee, Okla., to take on St. Gregory's (15-8, 6-1) for its next outings, a doubleheader at noon Friday then a single game at noon Saturday. The Cavaliers went into a weekend series against Southwestern Christian in second place in the SAC, having swept its series against Southwestern Assemblies of God and Bacone, who are stacked at the bottom of the conference standings. SGU lost its series-opener against SCU, 7-1.
