Torres, Mumm deliver in Pioneer win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAXAHACHIE – Kevin Torres pitched a four-hitter and Alex Mumm hit a game-winning home run in the eighth inning to lead Wayland Baptist to a 5-3 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon. The win came after the Lions recorded a 3-0 victory in the opener.

With 5-9 records in the Sooner Athletic Conference, Wayland (17-20) and SAGU (14-26) remain tied for seventh place in the league, although either the Pioneers or Lions will inch ahead after the series finale at 1 p.m. Saturday. That game will be held at Waxahachie Sports Complex and not on the SAGU campus where Friday's games were played. No live coverage of Saturday's game is available.

Wayland outplayed SAGU in Friday's second game, ending with 10 hits compared to the Lions' four and committing no errors versus the home team's two miscues. But it took Mumm's two-run home run in the eighth to claim the victory.

The Pioneers ended a 14-inning scoreless drought in the third when, after a lead-off single and an error, second baseman Taylor Grady scored on a double steal.

SAGU immediately answered in the bottom of the inning and it remained tied at 1 until Wayland got another run across in the fifth following another lead-off hit by Grady, this one a double.

The Lions again responded right away, matching Wayland's run and seeing it one as SAGU scored twice on the strength of three of its four hits in the bottom of the fifth.

The Pioneers tied it back up with a run in the sixth. After senior catcher Ernesto Lizardi drew a lead-off walk, courtesy runner Juan Ponce stole second then scored after Paxton Covel's deep fly-out to center.

After a scoreless seventh, Lizardi again got things going for Wayland in the eighth with a double down the left-field line. One out later, Mumm slapped his two-run homer over the left-field fence. It was the senior outfielder's third blast of the season and 13th in his two seasons in the Wayland lineup.

Torres put a bow on the win by retiring the Lions on three fly balls, separated by a walk. The junior – who made just his second start of the season – struck out a career-high seven and walked seven in improving to 5-2. He tossed 119 pitches.

Caleb Davidson matched Grady's and Mumm's two hits. Grady and Ponce also scored twice apiece, and Lizardi drew two walks.

The Pioneers improved to 2-3 in extra-inning games.

In the first contest, Wayland was held to three hits – two from shortstop Will Bass – by SAGU's Raul Castro (6-5), who struck out three and walked two. Freshman Kyle Eifert (3-2) also went the distance for Wayland, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Only one of the Lions' runs was earned as the Pioneers matched a season-high with four errors. SAGU committed two errors.

Wayland left seven runners on base.

The Pioneers have dropped the opening game of all five of its SAC series.
