No. 5 Flying Queens roll past OPSU, 65-39

Box Score On the heels of their victory over Mid-America Christian on Saturday afternoon, the fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens snagged yet another home-court win Monday night in Hutcherson Center as they triumphed over Oklahoma Panhandle State University, 65-39.

"They executed and did what they needed to do to win the game," Coach Alesha Ellis said following the Sooner Athletic Conference victory.

The Flying Queens (12-3, 6-2 SAC) held the lead throughout the entire game. The Lady Aggies (9-6, 2-6) weren't far behind after a low-scoring, 10-6 first quarter, but Wayland ramped things up in the second period when they were outscored the visitors from Goodwell, Okla., 29-9. WBU went into halftime holding a comfortable 39-15 advantage.

"We played better on the defensive end tonight. We held them to 15 points at halftime, which is something we're proud of," said Robertson, who on Saturday notched her 100th victory in four-plus seasons at WBU.

The Flying Queens shifted it to cruise control in the final 20 minutes, taking as much as a 29-point lead but ultimately outscoring the Lady Aggies by only two points.

The 39 points tied for WBU's best defensive effort of the season, matching the output in a 97-39 win over University of the Southwest in the season-opener.

Leading the Flying Queens on offense was Kendrick Clark, who in her second start recorded 16 points and eight rebounds. She was the only WBU player in double-figures as all 10 scored.

"I felt like Kendrick came in and had a big game for us and we needed that," Ellis of the sophomore.

Another sophomore, Kelea Pool, also had eight rebounds followed by Morgan Bennett who had seven and led with seven assists. Maci Merket totaled five rebounds and nine points.

"Maci and Morgan rebounded the ball a lot tonight, and our bench did well and did what they needed to do to help us. Players like Margaret (Gaydon) and Kambrey (Blakey) are really coming along and stepping up when they are in the game."

Blakey, still another sophomore, added nine points and freshman Gaydon eight.

"There are some things we need to improve on the offensive end, but most importantly we just need to continue getting better every day," Ellis said. "We have a big game coming up against Oklahoma City. We made some mistakes tonight that we can't make in that game."

The Flying Queens will be on the road over the end of the week with a game against No. 8 Oklahoma City University (14-2, 7-0) at 6 p.m. Thursday. Then they will head to Kansas to take on SAC newcomer Central Christian College (1-14, 0-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
OCU and CCC square off on Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
