OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist's fifth-ranked women's wrestling team swept a tri-dual against 15
th-ranked Missouri Baptist and Bacone on Thursday in Muskogee, Okla., before falling short against ninth-ranked Oklahoma City University in a dual Friday night at OCU.
On Thursday, the Pioneers defeated Missouri Baptist and Bacone by almost identical scores, 38-10, and 38-9, respectively. The going was tougher Friday when WBU took the lightest three weight classes but fell in the rest and came up short against the Stars, 28-15.
The WBU men, ranked the equivalent of 41
st in the NAIA, also competed in Muskogee and Oklahoma City. Against 19
th-ranked OCU, the Pioneers went down, 34-15. In results reported Thursday, the Pioneers edged Missouri Baptist, ranked the equivalent of 30
th, 25-24, while narrowly falling to Bacone, ranked the equivalent of 33
rd, 29-24.
Winning all three of their match-ups over the two days were, for the WBU women,
Asia Ray at 101,
Rhonda Johnson at 109 and 116, and
Gabriela Ramos-Diaz at 116 and 123. Sweeping their three match-ups for the WBU men were
Tommy Rosen-St. John, including a pair of pins, at 174, and
Riley Williams at 197.
The trip was telling for the WBU women.
"This trip was a two-day test to mirror our next competition, which is the two-day national tournament," Wayland coach
Aaron Meister said. "We now know that we're not ready, but I feel confident that we will improve on some of the things that we came up short on and get the outcome that we want."
As for the Pioneer men, assistant coach
Chad Cook said his wrestlers also felt the effects of the back-to-back competitions.
"We didn't bring the same energy as (Thursday), which would have been tough to do on consecutive days, but it's also something that we have to figure out to be successful at the national tournament, which is a two-day weigh-in. At 174, Tommy capped off a good two days with a pin and really seems to be hitting his stride.
"We have three weeks to heal up, make a few technical adjustments and get our minds ready to bring home SAC championships."
Next up for the Wayland women, now sporting a 5-3 duals record, are WCWA Nationals Feb. 9 and 10 back in Oklahoma City. Next for the WBU men (5-6), is the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 17 also in Oklahoma City. NAIA Nationals is set for March 2 and 3 in Des Moines, Iowa.
