After helping Wayland Baptist to its third series sweep of the young season last weekend, Pioneer pitcher Kevin Torres and catcher Jonathan Ottenwalder swept the Sooner Athletic Conference weekly baseball awards.
Torres was named SAC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a two-hit, complete-game shutout in the Pioneers' 6-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State. In setting the tone for the three-game sweep, the 6-foot senior right-hander from Miami, Fla., struck out four and walked just one in seven innings as he improved to 2-0 on the season.
Meanwhile, Ottenwalder was named SAC Baseball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-11 junior catcher/designated hitter from Santiago, Dominican Republic, went a combined 4-for-8 at the plate, including two walks, with a 1.250 slugging percentage. Ottenwalder's shining moment came in Saturday's 11-7 victory when he fueled an eight-run second inning with a pair of home runs. He opened the inning with a solo homer then later added a two-run shot. Ottenwalder finished the series with four RBI and three runs scored.
Off to their best start in eight years, the 12-1 Pioneers next take a break from conference play by hosting MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in a four-game series at Wilder Field beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
