Southwestern Christian scored nine runs in two innings and made Wayland pay for four errors as the Eagles defeated No. 12 Wayland Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Field, 12-9.
The Eagles (18-8, 10-5 SAC) went back to Bethany, Okla., with the series after the teams split Friday. The Pioneers (18-9, 8-4) won the first, 16-13, before Southwestern Christian escaped with a 5-3 win in game 2.
On Saturday, Wayland was hurt by four errors that led to seven unearned runs.
The Pioneers trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the fourth, three on a bases-loaded triple by Matt Flores.
The Eagles got all four back in the next fifth on one swing: an opposite-field grand slam by Slayton Vaughan, who also homered in the next inning – a two-run shot as part of a five-run sixth that gave Southwestern Christian an 11-6 lead.
The Pioneers were down 12-6 before cutting the deficit in half with three runs in the eighth, two on RBIs by Braeden Bomer and Austin Moya.
Wayland made some noise in the ninth when Brendon Foust and Flores came through with back-to-back two-out singles. But Bryan Nunez struck out to end the threat and the game.
Freshman Bradden Kennard made his first collegiate start and lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Brayden Price spelled Kennard and went 3 1/3, with just one of the four runs against him earned on two hits with three walks and four Ks. Chris Lacher recorded the final out.
The Pioneers struck out eight times against SCU pitchers Jose Perez (2-0) and Samuel Raglin.
Both teams ended with nine hits, but the Eagles committed just one error.
Wayland hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Jarvis Christian (11-15) beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
