For the second straight week, Wayland Baptist senior Kevin Torres has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Torres, a right-hander from Miami, Fla., allowed one run on seven hits while striking out a career-high nine and walking two in a complete-game 5-1 win over MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.).
In five starts, Torres is 3-0 on the season with two complete games. He has a 1.52 ERA, and in 29 2/3 innings has 32 strikeouts and 12 walks.
Torres also was SAC Pitcher of the Week last week after tossing a two-hit, complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. He struck out four and walked just one in seven innings. Pioneers Jonathan Ottenwalder was SAC Player of the Week last week.
The Pioneers went on to win three of four games from MidAmerica Nazarene last weekend, boosting their record to 15-2.
Wayland is in Abilene today for a 6 p.m. non-conference game against McMurry (3-9). The Pioneers return to SAC play this weekend by hosting third-ranked Oklahoma City (13-2, 4-1) in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and a single game at noon Saturday. WBU is at the top of the SAC standings at 6-0, tied with No. 23 Texas Wesleyan
The first regular-season NAIA Top 25 poll will be released later today.
SAC Player of the Week is Diogen Ceballos of Southwestern Christian University. The junior from La Vega, Dominican Republic, hit .500 (11-for-22) with 11 runs scored, three home runs and 11 RBIs in five games against Texas Wesleyan and Central Christian.
