Behind a triple-double for freshman
Cailyn Breckel and four players posting career-highs for points, the fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist Flying Queens rolled to one of their most lopsided wins in program history Thursday night in Hutcherson Center over Bacone College, winning by 87 points, 113-26.
Queens coach
Alesha Ellis commented on the benefits that the point difference allowed them.
"We had a few players who have kind of been in a slump with their shooting and this was a good game for them to get their confidence back up," Ellis said.
The victory for the conference-leading Flying Queens (16-2, 10-0 SAC) came on 58 percent (47-of-81) field goal shooting, including 41 percent (14-of-34) from long range. It's the third time this season Wayland has hit 14 3s in a game, missing matching the school program set last season by one.
WBU continually beat the outmatched Lady Warriors down the floor, especially early, and ended with 51 fast-break points; Bacone had none.
Incredibly, Wayland's defense held the last-place Lady Warriors (0-13, 0-10) to only two points in the first quarter and five in the first half, by which time the Queens had already put 57 points on the board.
"I feel like we executed well on both ends of the floor, and that's something we wanted to work on We also used this game as an opportunity to work on our zone (defense), which we need to continue to get better at," Ellis said.
All 11 Flying Queens scored, six of them contributing in double figures. Wayland got a career-high 20 points off the bench from sophomore transfer
Kaylee Edgemon, and closely following was another substitute, Breckel with 18, which also was a season-best. Breckel, who hit 8-of-10 field goals, also pulled down 12 rebounds and had 12 assists, becoming the first Queen to put a triple-double in the books since senior teammate
Maci Merket last season.

"Cailyn, one of our freshmen, got a triple-double, and I haven't had many players do that," Ellis said proudly.
WBU's starting lineup got things rolling initially, but Wayland's bench took things the rest of the way. Collectively, the Flying Queens' subs contributed 75 of the Queens' 113 points.
Behind Breckel was sophomore
Margaret Gaydon with a career-high 15, followed by
Deborah VanDijk,
Kambrey Blakey and
Kelea Pool, who added 11 points each. Redshirt-freshman
Jolie Donaldson put in eight points for her career-high.
Ellis said about her bench players, "I'm glad that second group got to get in there. It gave us a chance to grow and get those players more playing time and more developed. It makes for a much stronger-looking future."
It appeared Wayland would threaten the most-lopsided win in program history: 103 points in a 130-27 victory over Texas Lutheran in the 1977-78 season. The record for fewest points by an opponent is five in a 54-5 win over the Stanton Independents in 1951-52.
The Queens also came close to the long-standing record for assists, getting 36 to finish eight shy of the mark set in 1989.
It was WBU's seventh time to break 100 points this season. One more will match the record from 1977-78.
The Queens return to Hutcherson Center for their next conference matchup at 2 p.m. Saturday against John Brown (11-5, 7-2 SAC). The Golden Eagles, ranked the equivalent of 30
th in the NAIA, defeated Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Thursday, 75-44 for their fifth-straight win.
