Joshua Smedema shot the lowest round in school history – 8-under 63 – and Wayland Baptist turned in its best-round ever – 266 – as the Pioneers assumed a one-shot lead after Monday's first round of the Chicken Express Invitational at Plainview Country Club.

On the women's side, Wayland's Pioneers are in third place, hoping to improve their standing over the final 18 holes set to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday for both the men and women.

At the first-ever collegiate tournament held at the local course, the WBU men shot an 18-under 266 to lead Midland College by a single shot. Western Texas is third at 279, followed by Ranger College at 282, Bethany (Kan.) at 285, Kansas Wesleyan at 304 and St. Thomas at 307.

Smedema's 63 bettered the old record of 64 shot by three golfers, mostly recently by Andrew Williamson at the Battle at Primm in Nevada in 2018. Michael Loppnow did it in 2010 at Amarillo's Tascosa Country Club and Kevin Stinson shot 63 in 2008 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz.

WBU's 266 eclipsed the previous program record of 11-under 269 shot in March 2018 at Primm Valley Golf Course in Nevada.

Smedema's 63 featured just three pars as the sophomore from Cape Town, South Africa, recorded 10 birdies, four bogeys and an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole. Smedema had no pars on the front-nine and shot 6-under 29.

Smedema is tied for the lead with Jake Leatherwood of Western Texas College. They hold a one-shot lead over J.T. Pittman of Midland College.

Wayland's Jake Craft is alone in fourth following his 65. Sentanio Minnie shot 67 and is tied for sixth place while Sebastien Tremulot is tied for 13th at even-par 71. Johannes Hounsgaard turned in a 74 and is tied for 24th in the 42-golfer field.

In the women's tournament, Wayland shot 313 and trails leader Western Texas by 10 shots and Ranger College by eight. McLennan College is fourth, two behind Wayland, while Bethany (Kan.) is fifth at 328.

The top individual at even-par 71 is Josephine Bertelsen of Western Texas, who holds a two-stroke lead over Ranger's Iman Adams and McLennan's Libby Singleton.

In a five-way tie for fifth after shooting 75 are Wayland's Chante van Zyl and Kenlie Baxter. Booklyn Nix is 15th after an 81, a shot in front of fellow freshman Laura Klimova.

Twenty-seven golfers are competing.
