Wayland Baptist senior
Morgan Bennett has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
A 5-foot-8 guard from Shallowater, Bennett helped the No. 5 Flying Queens to a pair of road wins last weekend, 87-79 over sixth-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University and 75-72 over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, ranked seventh in NCAA Division III.
Â
Against OLLU, Bennett scored a career-high 23 points, hitting 7-of-13 field goals, including 3-of-8 3-pointers, as she played all 40 minutes. Less than 24 hours against UMHB in a game that saw Wayland rally from a 21-point second-half deficit, Bennett scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
Bennett also collected 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. She finished 8-of-12 (67 percent) from the free-throw line and 13-of-21 (62 percent) from the field, including 5-of-11 (46 percent) from long range.
Â
This is the second career SAC Player of the Week honor for Bennett, an NAIA Second Team All-American last season.
Â
Bennett is poised to break the 36-year-old all-time assists record at Wayland. With 539, she is just 75 assists short of breaking the record of 613 set by Chris Kennedy from 1979-83. Bennett also has 867 career points and would become the second Flying Queen this season, joining
Deborah VanDijk who did it in the second game, to join the program's 1,000-point club.
