McPHERSON & CONCORDIA, Kan. – Wayland Baptist dominated Central Christian, 46-12, before bowing to eighth-ranked Cloud County Community College, 29-19, in men's wrestling duals Wednesday and Thursday.
Wayland coach
Aaron Meister came away encouraged following the two matches.
"I was really proud of their effort. This was the first time I can say we're moving in the right direction as a team. We went out and started executing the things we're practicing. We're getting tougher and getting more consistent," Meister said.
Against Cloud County, one of the top teams in the junior college ranks, Meister said, "Our match awareness and mental mistakes ended up being our Achille's heel."
Posting wins against CCCC were
Adelfo Valdez, who pulled out an 8-6 overtime victory at 133 pounds,
Kye Fehrenbacher with a pin at 165, and
Matt Alejandro and
Hunter McCarty with lopsided 26-10 and 21-2 wins at 174 and 184, respectively. The Pioneers were within 19-17 with two matches remaining.
"It was a tight dual until the end. We were a little overmatched in a couple of matches. If we don't wrestle as a team we won't win as a team," Meister said.
"I'm proud of that effort, just not proud of the (loss)."
Against Central Christian, the Pioneers won the first eight matches of the day.
"
Gabe Gray came out and grabbed the energy by getting a pin, and that set the tone for most of the dual," Meister said. "We scored bonus points in 7-of-9 contested matches. They were executing more of the stuff that we've been practicing in their matches.
"At 184 in the battle of the McCartys, Hunter weathered an aggressive start by Central Christian's McCarty and won several scrambles to eventually get a tech fall."
The Kansas results kept Wayland's duals record even at 2-2.
After a tournament and two duals in a six-day span, the Pioneers are off until hosting the Wayland Invitational on Dec. 7.
