DES MOINES, Iowa – A pair of former Wayland Baptist student-athletes – Benard Keter and
Quintaveon Poole – participated at the recent USATF Outdoor Championships.
Keter, an NAIA national champion at Wayland before transferring to Texas Tech, finished fourth in Saturday's 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a time of 8 minutes, 37.62 seconds. He just missed qualifying for the IAAF World Championships as the top three qualify for the Team USA contingent to the World Championships Sept. 27-Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar.
Keter, 27, a native of Kenya who attended WBU from 2014-15 and graduated from Tech in 2018, now trains with the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.
Meanwhile, Poole, also a national champion and a native of Atlanta who completed his eligibility at Wayland last spring, competed in the 400 meters on Drake Stadium's blue oval. From a field of 30, Poole qualified on Thursday for the semifinals with a time of 45.92 seconds but had an off-day Friday, running 47.13, and didn't make the final.
It was the second straight year Poole advanced to the semis.
