SAC honors Cooper as Player of Week

Wayland Baptist Flying Queen Jenna Cooper has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Cooper helped the sixth-ranked Flying Queens to a pair of convincing conference wins, first over Mid-America Christian, 93-71, then over Science & Arts of Oklahoma, 98-64.

Against MACU, which went into the game unbeaten in conference play, Cooper scored a season-high 29 points, largely on 7-of-9 3-point shooting as she went 11-of-14 from the field. She also pulled down 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, plus got three assists and two steals.

Two days later against USAO, the 5-foot-11 sophomore forward from Claude came within a points of her second consecutive double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. The first-year sophomore transfer had eight points and nine rebounds at halftime before, with WBU comfortably in front, she saw limited playing time in the second half.

For the week, Cooper averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and 1½ steals. She shot 67 percent from the field (14-of-21) and 69 percent from 3-point range (9-of-13).

The wins – the eighth and ninth straight for the Flying Queens – helped Wayland improve to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the SAC.

Cooper, who is averaging 9.5 points and a team-leading 7.9 rebounds per game, now is eligible for NAIA Player of the Week honors.

The Flying Queens next play Thursday night at Langston, Okla.
