Box Score HOBBS, N.M. – The Wayland Baptist baseball team took its show on the road for the first time this season, scoring seven runs in the first inning and seven more over the next two frames as the Pioneers cruised to a 15-2, seven-inning victory over University of the Southwest here Tuesday afternoon.
Eight Pioneers combined for a dozen hits, including two each by
Gregory Ozuna,
Brendon Foust and
Jake Green. Foust homered for the second straight game, a three-run blast in the third, for his eighth homer of the season. Green ended with five RBIs on a pair of two-run singles and an RBI-groundout in the fifth when the Pioneers scored their lone run after the third.
Seven Pioneer pitchers combined on a six-hitter with five strikeouts and five walks. (Individual pitching statistics were not immediately available).
Six pitchers took the mound for the Mustangs.
It was the first road game for Wayland (12-4) after 14 season-opening games at Wilder Field. USW fell to 4-9. It was the ninth straight time Wayland, after eight wins to start the season, followed a win-one, lose-one pattern.
The Pioneers and Mustangs meet again on March 17 in Plainview.
Wayland returns home for its next six games, including a four-game set against Sterling, Kan. (6-4) with a pair of doubleheaders starting at 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
