Brendon Foust and
L.J. Diaz have been named Apex Collision Center Student-Athletes of the Week. The two are being honored after the Pioneers swept NCAA Division II Adams State, Colo., in a four-game series to improve to 8-0, the program's best start since 2004.
Foust, as designated hitter batting fifth in the order, had a monster series with four homers, including a three-run, two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth of the series finale that completed Wayland's comeback from a six-run deficit for an 11-9 victory. Foust also had a solo homer earlier in the game after also homering in Saturday's first game as well as Friday's series opener. For the weekend he wound up going 5-for-13 (.385) with the four homers, a triple, eight RBIs, and six runs. He posted a 1.462 slugging percentage.
A 5-foot-11 senior from Amarillo, Foust has five homers on the season to share the NAIA lead. Additionally, he ranks ninth in the NAIA with 12 RBI and 10
th in runs scored with 11.
Diaz, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound right-handed pitcher from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was the starter for the series. In five scoreless innings, Diaz allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. He earned his first victory as a Pioneer as Wayland wound up with an 8-1 victory over the Grizzlies.
Diaz transferred to Wayland from Tusculum University, Tenn.
The Pioneers are back in action at 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday for two more doubleheaders against MidAmerica Nazarene, Kan.
