Pioneers just miss out on Top 25 ranking

NAIA Top 25
NAIA Team/Individual Rankings
Enjoying one of their best starts to a season in years and with one of the most explosive offenses in the country, the Wayland Baptist baseball team just missed being included in the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

The Pioneers (22-7, 5-1 SAC) – who are second in the NAIA in home runs per game and third in both runs scored and RBI per game, plus have numerous individuals among the NAIA's statistical leaders – are the equivalent of 26th in the voting by a panel of head coaches.

Wayland is one of four Sooner Athletic Conference teams ranked or receiving votes. Science & Arts of Oklahoma (17-1, 6-0) moved up one spot from the preseason poll released Nov. 6 to No. 2. The Drovers, with one of the elite pitching staffs in the nation (they led the NAIA with a .168 opponents' batting average and 1.95 ERA), received two first-place votes. Top-ranked Southeastern, Fla. (23-1) received the other 16 first-place votes.

Oklahoma City (15-8, 2-1) fell eight spots to No. 18. And, Texas Wesleyan (14-9, 3-3), which was ranked No. 17 in the preseason, fell to the equivalent of No. 27 right behind the Pioneers. Southwestern Christian (17-9, 2-4), which was ranked the equivalent of 34th in the preseason, is no longer receiving votes.

With head coach Brad Bass just six wins short of his 1,000th career victory, Wayland plays a three-game series this week on the road against Oklahoma-Panhandle State, a single game at 2 p.m. Thursday then a doubleheader at noon Saturday. The Pioneers then return home to face University of the Southwest at 4 p.m. March 17 before a showdown with No. 2 USAO March 20 and 21.

That will be Wayland's first Top 25 competition of the season, although the Pioneers did host MidAmerica Nazarene (12-5), which this week is ranked No. 25, early last month and split the four-game series.

The Top 25 will be released bi-weekly through the rest of the regular-season.
