Luis Vargas has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the second time this season.
In leading the Pioneers (21-7) to a conference sweep of Central Christian (Kan.), Vargas hit .700 (7-for-10) and blasted three home runs, including two in the series-opening 14-2 win when he went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. It was Vargas' third multi-home run game of the season, and he's had homers in 13 of Wayland's 28 games.
As the Pioneers also posted wins of 7-2 and 13-3, Vargas finished the series with five RBI, six runs scored and a 1.800 slugging average.
A 6-foot-5, 235-pounder center-fielder who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and grew up in Boston, Vargas ranks in the top three in the NAIA in nine batting categories, including first in homers (18) and runs scored (46) and second in RBI (48). His .484 batting average ranks 15
th in the NAIA.
Vargas also was recognized for his efforts the week of Feb. 3-9 when the Pioneers split a four-game series with MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). In that series, Vargas hit five home runs and had 13 RBIs while batting .727.
WBU players have taken three of the six SAC player of the week honors so far this season. Besides the two by Vargas,
Brendon Foust also has been honored. In addition,
L.J. Diaz has been named SAC Pitcher of the Week once.
The Pioneers play McMurry at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a rescheduled game before traveling to Goodwell, Okla., to face Oklahoma-Panhandle State in a three-game weekend series.
