Soccer player
Chloe Marmitt and cross country runner
Dennis Kiptoo have been named Wayland Baptist University Student Athletes of the Week.
Â
Marmitt helped the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma City University in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. Marmitt provided the assist that led to the winning goal by
Bianca Roman with just 11 seconds left in the second overtime. It was the first assist of the season for the junior midfielder from Amarillo and provided Wayland with its fourth post-season victory in women's soccer.
Â
Marmitt and the third-seeded Pioneers next play No. 2 seed Science & Arts of Oklahoma in the SAC Tourney semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Chickasha, Okla.
Â
Meanwhile, Kiptoo helped the men's cross country team to a runner-up finish in the SAC Championships in Bethany, Okla. Coach
Brian Whitlock said Kiptoo unselfishly agreed to hold back and not pursue the race favorites in order to benefit Wayland's No. 2 and 3 runners.
Â
"It made a big difference for my second and third men," Whitlock said. The strategy helped freshmen
Alex Spencer place fourth – right behind Kiptoo in third – and
Jordan Dixon take ninth. Both joined Kiptoo as all-conference honorees and national qualifiers.
Â
"Dennis has really developed, not only as an athlete this year but he is a true team player," Whitlock said.
Â
Kiptoo, a junior from Kenya,, placed third for the second straight year, completing the 8k course in 25:43.
