Men's soccer to host JBU in quarterfinals

Wayland Baptist is seeded fourth and will host John Brown University of Arkansas in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. The match will be played at 2 p.m. Friday at Berl Huffman Soccer Complex in Lubbock, where the Pioneers have played their last two games due to grass-growing issues at Hilliard Field on the WBU campus.

Spectators will be allowed at the match, with free admission. Streaming and live stats will be offered.

SAC Tourney Bracket

Wayland finished the regular-season with an 11-4-1 record, including 6-2-1 in the SAC. JBU wound up with a 5-4-1 overall record and 5-4 in the conference.

It will be the second trip to Lubbock for John Brown in a month. The Pioneers and Golden Eagles faced off at Lubbock Cooper High School on March 3, with Wayland winning 2-1 on Alessandro Felizzola's golden goal in the 99th minute. It was Felizzola's first goal as a Pioneer.

John Brown is the defending SAC Tournament champion, having defeated Science & Arts of Oklahoma in the finals last season, 1-0, for its first SAC Tournament title since 2002.

In the conference tourney semifinals last season, JBU – the regular-season champion and No. 1 seed – knocked off Wayland, 2-1, in Siloam Springs, Ark., getting a golden goal 2½ minutes into the second overtime. It was the team's second meeting at Alumni Field in three weeks, with the Golden Eagles also winning the first meeting, 2-0.

Southwestern Christian enters the SAC tournament as the No. 1 seed after taking the league's regular-season title, giving the school its first conference title in any sport. The Eagles (11-1-3) meet No. 8 seed Central Christian, Kan., (7-10-1) at 2 p.m. Friday in Bethany, Okla. The winner of that game will take on the Wayland-John Brown winner in the semifinals April 6, with the higher seed hosting.

The championship is set for April 9, also at the home of the highest remaining seed.

The conference tournament champion reaches the NAIA Championships, which begin with the NAIA Championship Opening Round on April 22-24 on campus sites throughout the nation.
