Runners compete at final conference tune-up in Kansas

WINFIELD, Kan. – At their final outing before the conference meet, Wayland Baptist's men's cross country team finished 10th out of 17 teams at the 43rd annual NAIA Mid-States Classic held Saturday at Kansas Veterans Home.
 
Results

Without top runner Dennis Kiptoo and competing for the fourth straight weekend, Wayland produced 254 points. Oklahoma City University, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, won with 36 points as three Stars finished in the top five, led by overall winner Abraham Chelangam who finished the 8k course in 24 minutes, 30.10 seconds.
 
Pacing the Pioneers was Malachi Macias, who placed 17th in 26:46.75. Other WBU runners and their finishes were: Alex Spencer, 20th in 26:52.85; Jace Sanchez, 22nd in 26:54.36; Cole Rubac, 98th in 29:43.73; Zachary Shanklin, 157th in 32:53.56; and Diego Castaneda, 179th in 38:57.94.
 
The WBU runners get a much-deserved break next weekend to rest up for the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships set for Nov. 5 in Bethany, Okla.
