Jarvis Christian series postponed; Bass reflects on emotional weekend

Wayland Baptist's baseball doubleheader at Jarvis Christian on Tuesday in Hawkins has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather. A rescheduled date has not yet been determined.

The Pioneers (16-10, 1-5 SAC) return to Sooner Athletic Conference play next weekend by hosting Texas Wesleyan (16-12, 4-5) in a three-game series at Wilder Field. The Pioneers and Rams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday then a single game at noon Saturday.

Wayland is coming off of a four-game series split on the road against Arlington Baptist that saw the Pioneers go against longtime Pioneers head coach Brad Bass, now with the Patriots.

Bass experienced a variety of emotions as he went against former players and assistant coaches.

"I experienced very mixed emotions. I love the guys on both sides at a level that is really hard to explain," Bass said. "I really was excited to see many of my former players, many of whom will graduate this May. I am really proud of them for getting that done. They have really had to endure a lot of adversity to make it to graduation. I will do all that I can to be there."

As for the series itself, Bass said, "I just wanted both teams to play well and get better. I believe that happened."

The veteran coach said it was difficult seeing the Pioneers take the field for the first time in many years without assistant coach Tommy McMillan, who died suddenly last September while serving as acting head coach following Bass' resignation from WBU.

"I have been throwing almost all pre-game BP (batting practice) and normally hitting pre-game infield/outfield in honor of Tommy (duties which McMillan handled at WBU). I was able to get through that this weekend, but after getting back to my apartment, it hit me. I miss him often and wish that he was on that bus."
