Queens get Road Win Over OLLU in First Game After Christmas Break

San Antonio, Texas – The Flying Queens returned from Christmas break with a 72-58 win on the road against the Saints of Our Lady of the Lake (3-7, 2-3). Megan Nestor led the way with 18 points, Taylor Houston finished with a double-double, and Linda Brice finished with 15 points.

RV Wayland Baptist (9-2, 4-1 SAC) experienced quite a bit of foul trouble and trailed the Saints 23-18 after the first quarter, but the Queens dominated the second quarter 15-4 to take a 33-27 lead into the halftime break. Brice scored 9 of her 15 points in the second quarter igniting a spark for the Queens. The Queens implemented a full court press to speed up the Saints offense, and it was successful in forcing 9 Saints turnovers in the period. The Queens defense forced the Saints into shooting 18.2 % from the floor and 0% from 3-point range.

When talking about the Queens defense, Coach Jason Cooper said, "I thought we were solid defensively and was proud of the turnovers we forced early. We didn't finish in transition as well as I would have liked, but I liked the 41 shot attempts."

The Queens came out aggressively in the 2nd half going on a 18-4 run to begin the third quarter extending their lead to 51-31. Buckets by Nestor and Houston on Emily Sigala assists prompted the Saints to call a quick timeout into the half. Sigala went for 5 assists in the third quarter after the Queens had 0 assists at the halftime break. Winning the third quarter scoring 21-8, the Queens took a 54-35 lead in the final frame.

Coach Cooper mentioned the impact Sigala has as the floor general for the Queens saying, "Emily continues to be a great floor general for us. Her assist to turnover ratio is so good. She really understands what we are looking for out there and does a great job facilitating the offense."

Nestor scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter using her 6'4" height to her advantage on the inside. A jumper by Brice and two layups by Nestor extended the Queens lead to a 26-point lead with just under 4 minutes remaining in regulation. The Queens went on to defeat the Saints 72-58 giving the Queens a solid 4-1 record on the road.
